What is an Ombudsman?
An Ombudsman examines complaints from members of the public who believe they have been treated unfairly by the State and other organisations. Ombudsman Offices are free, independent, objective and fair. We’re here to help people navigate their way through often complex procedures and practices. In Ireland there are 7 Ombudsman Offices.
- The Office of the Ombudsman (for public services)
- The Ombudsman for Children
- Garda Síocháná Ombudsman Commission
- The Ombudsman for the Defence Forces
- The Press Ombudsman
- An Coimisinéir Teanga
- and us, the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman.
Before bringing a complaint to the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman, you must first make a complaint with your provider, such as your bank, insurance company, investment company, broker or pension provider.
If you are not satisfied with its response, you can bring your complaint to us and we will investigate. The provider you complain about must comply with any decision the Ombudsman makes.
